Q: Why did you decide to run for County Commission?
A: I first ran because Nassau County was changing rapidly, and I believed residents deserved a commissioner who would manage that growth rather than simply accept whatever came our way. After 20 years in the Navy, service did not stop being part of my life when I took off the uniform. This community also stood behind my Foar From Home teammates and me as we rowed across the Atlantic to raise awareness and support for veterans. Running for commission was another opportunity to give back. I am seeking another term because the job is not finished. We must continue reducing the size and cost of county government, protecting Nassau County’s character and ensuring growth pays its own way.
Q: As you’ve campaigned, what are frequent concerns being voiced by residents, and, if elected, what steps will you take to address these concerns?
A: Residents are concerned about the rising cost of living, government spending, traffic, drainage and the loss of Nassau County’s rural and coastal character. They want safer roads and reliable public services, but they do not want government growing faster than the families paying for it.
I have proposed a 10% across-the-board spending reduction and will continue pressing for lower millage rates while protecting public safety. We must also require new development to fund the additional roads, parks, fire-rescue facilities and law enforcement capacity it creates. Vision 2050 gives us a community-driven framework for directing growth where infrastructure can support it while protecting agricultural lands and established neighborhoods. I also supported the temporary data center moratorium so Nassau County can establish responsible standards before approving projects with potentially significant impacts.
Q: What perspectives and experience will you bring to the commission that are unique to you and differentiate you from other candidates?
A: I bring both proven governing experience and a lifetime of service under demanding circumstances. I served 20 years in the United States Navy, retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer qualified in submarine, surface and aviation warfare. I completed Cold War submarine patrols, two combat deployments following 9/11 and assignments on the staffs of three submarine flag officers.
That experience taught me to evaluate the facts, build effective teams, manage limited resources and remain focused on the mission when the pressure is high. I also hold a business management degree, understand the challenges facing local small businesses and have completed advanced county government leadership training. Most importantly, I already have a record residents can evaluate, not simply a list of promises.
Q: Tell me what you would do in your first 100 days in office to deliver on campaign promises.
A: During the first 100 days of my next term, I would continue to push for a 10% spending-reduction target into the county’s budget process. Every department should identify efficiencies, outdated expenditures and opportunities to consolidate services, while protecting law enforcement, fire-rescue and other essential operations.
I would also move Vision 2050 from planning into action through the Comprehensive Plan, with policies protecting rural and agricultural areas and directing development toward appropriate growth areas. I would require regular, public progress reports on roads, drainage projects and infrastructure funded through impact and mobility fees. Finally, I would work to complete clear data center regulations addressing water, electricity, noise, environmental effects and the financial benefit, or cost, to Nassau County taxpayers.
Q: What makes you a good representative of the Nassau County community?
A: I understand that Nassau County is not one single community. It includes the island, Nassauville, O’Neil, Yulee, Callahan, Hilliard and rural communities with different needs but a shared desire to preserve their quality of life.
My wife, Lulu, and I built our lives here, raised our family here and became involved in local business, charitable organizations and community events. I have listened to residents at commission meetings, neighborhood gatherings, nonprofit events and ordinary conversations around the county. Whether someone agrees with me or not, I will listen, explain my position and remain accessible. I believe representation means showing up, doing the homework and remembering that public office belongs to the public, not the person temporarily holding it.
